Ílhavo is a Portuguese city, located in the Center Region and Aveiro Region sub-region.
It is the seat of a municipality with the same name (and includes two cities: Ílhavo and Gafanha da Nazaré), with an area of ​​73.48 km² and 38 598 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 4 parishes. The municipality is divided into three distinct sites by arms of the Ria de Aveiro and is limited to the north and northeast by the municipality of Aveiro (land border to the northwest and across the estuary to the north) and to the south by Vagos.
The city is famous for its porcelain industry Vista Alegre The municipality of Ílhavo comprises two cities: Gafanha da Nazaré and Ílhavo. In the municipality of Ílhavo, in the town of Barra, there is the Barra lighthouse, the highest of the 48 sea lighthouses in Portugal. Farol and Praia da Barra are part of the parish of Gafanha da Nazaré. Costa Nova do Prado is part of the parish of Gafanha da Encarnação. The beach of Costa Nova do Prado is also one of the places of excellence of the municipality, being a must-visit for those who pass in the area. The typical houses of this beach (called Palheiros), are characterized by facades (originally made of wood, nowadays in concrete), listed in bright and cheerful colors, alternating with the white color.
Ílhavo is deeply linked to cod fishing; in fact, throughout the twentieth century, most captains who made long-distance companions were originally from the then village of Ílhavo. Also from the neighboring towns were many of the fishermen.
This, and other connections, between Ílhavo and the sea can be seen in the Maritime Museum of Ílhavo, which in addition to the building, has the only side cod trawler that survives. The ship is an integral part of the Museum and hosts temporary exhibitions.
