Oiã is a Portuguese village that is the seat of the Parish of Oiã in the Municipality of Oliveira do Bairro, a parish with an area of 26.74 km² and 7862 inhabitants (2021 census), thus having a population density of 294 inhabitants/km².

History

Oiã is over eight hundred years old, with the first document referring to Oiã dating back to 1220.

As for the origin of its name, Oiã derives from Oyana, a name linked to the Oliveira culture. Its etymology is oleana, which has olea in its root, as follows.

Currently, Oiã is one of the most populous parishes in the district of Aveiro, and is also one of the richest and undergoing prosperous development. This fact is largely due to some fundamental factors. However, the location is its biggest asset. Oiã is located 5 km from the municipal headquarters, is the same distance from the access junction to the A1 motorway (Aveiro Sul), 18 km from the city of Aveiro and 9 km from the connection to the A17 motorway. Furthermore, Oiã has a train station and an expanding industrial area.

In terms of associations, Oiã stands out for the diversity of its associations. The associative movement is huge, encompassing sporting, cultural, recreational and public interest associations.

Oiã is equipped with the main basic services needed by the population, the most recent being the Oiã Parish Council building, which also includes an auditorium with 366 seats and a library / reading center.
