Oliveira de Azeméis is a Portuguese city situated in the district of Aveiro. It is part of the Large Metropolitan area of Oporto, North Region and NUT III subregion of the "Entre Douro e Vouga" region. It is the Head of a Council with 19 boroughs, which is distributed by 12 territorial units. With an area of 163,41 km2 the municipality has a population of 66 212 inhabitants. It borders in the northeast the Council of Arouca, in the east the Council of Vale de Cambra and Sever do Vouga, in the south the Council of Albergaria-a-Velha, in the Southwest the Council of Estarreja and in the West the council of Ovar. Oliveira de Azeméis is an important city, dating references to the presence of human settlers, from at least 2,000 a.c. at the" Castros" (hillforts) of Ul and Ossela. Later, it became a staging stopover of the Roman Roads network of Conínbriga-Porto and Lisboa-Braga, of which a still existing Milestone representing mile XII is the proof. As a result of this privileged geographical position, it developed, being granted to the category of town and Head of the Council on January 5th 1799 by D. Maria I and it was on May 16th 1984 that it was raised to the category of city.
How to get?
The city can be reached by the A1 (Northern motorway) by the exit lanes of Estarreja and Feira, respectively. Besides A1, which intersects the territory of the municipality, other roads allow the easy access to the Council, roads such as A25, A29, A32(still not ready) , IC2 and EN224.
Concerning the railway system, the "Vale do Vouga" railway line links to the Northern line in Espinho, enabling passengers to reach Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Lisboa, etc easily. Road connections of passenger transportation are assured mostly to Oporto, Aveiro and Coimbra. There are however, regular lines that link some local and regional areas of the council.
Parque de La-Salette is a park located to the east of the IC2 that flanks the center of Oliveira de Azeméis, the park of La – Salette, "ex-libris" of this city, is a magnificent green space, crowned by the chapel of Our Lady of La Salette.
An authentic natural viewpoint, due to its characteristics, it is possible to discover São João da Madeira to the north, to the northeast the valley of the river Antuã and some mountainous areas of Arouca, such as Serra da Gralheira.
To the south, we can see the terraces of the parishes of Travanca, Pinheiro da Bemposta and the forested area of Bairrada; to the west, beyond the city, the Ria de Aveiro and the sea line from Ovar to Costa Nova.
La-Salette is a place in the parish of Oliveira de Azeméis, located in the eastern part of the same, which corresponds to the area covered by La-Salette Park and neighboring areas.
